Tragic.

But, he’s not massively unhappy or at least he wasn’t until he went to an industry conference and he was in the line for coffee at one of the breaks.

He saw an old client of his who said to Bob that he thought he’d gone out of business.

Bob was puzzled ‘what do you mean?’

His old client said ‘I rang you up two months ago. I had a massive problem to find a supplier. I had an opportunity on a company I was working with – half a million quid deal.’

Bob said ‘I dont remember that’

‘Oh I rang you and no one answered so I had to go somewhere else’

Bob went very quiet.

It turns out that the half million pound contract with the big blue chip that would have changed everything for Bob was lost because he hadn’t answered the phone

And the truth of it is this isn’t a made up story. I’ve changed the names of course because its embarrassing.

But this happens way more often than you think because as business owners we get complacent

We know we have a phone number there – on our website, on our socials and we think we have people in place to answer it but how do we know the calls we’re answered?

Did you miss any calls last week?

How do you know?

Because the answer is that in 99.99% of business cases the business owner has got no idea whether they missed a call last week or not.

And if they did miss a call they have no idea what sort of call it was

And genuinely that’s tragic. When you think of all the effort, of all the money, of all the time and the SOUL that you’ve put into building this business and you’re letting it all hang on the flip of a coin.

That hopefully the call will get answered when that big contract comes in.
